Az RNS molekula információtárolóként és enzimként is működhet. Monomerjeinek prebiotikus jelenléte és a lánc kialakulása jobbára igazolt. A mesterségesen evolválódott RNS enzimek funkcionális sokszínűsége arra utal, hogy egy gazdag metabolizmus is megvalósítható pusztán RNS enzimekkel. A RNS-nek és az RNS monomerből származtatható koenzimek (ATP, CoA, NAD, stb.) metabolizmusban betöltött kulcs szerepe sejtet egy "RNS" világot. Egyes RNS-re ható fehérje enzimek ősisége arra utal, hogy az utolsó közös ős RNS genommal rendelkezett.
A szakdolgozat célja átfogóbb jellegű szemle az élet keletkezésének erről a szakaszáról. Nem zárkózom el az élet keletkezésének más részeinek feldolgozása elől sem!
A következő résztémák lehetnek egy szakdolgozat témái:

  • Az RNS-t felépítő monomerek prebiotikus szintézise. A bázisok előállítása cianid polimerizációval. A ribóz előállítása formóz reakcióval. Stratégiák a nukleozidok és nukleotidok kialakítására.
  • Az RNS lánc kialakulásának lehetőségei. A lánchosszabbodás és replikáció problematikája.
  • Az RNS jelen metabolizmusunkban betöltött szerepe. Az RNS világ foszíliái.
  • Az RNS világ lehetőségei, a természetes és mesterséges RNS-enzimek.
  • Az utolsó közös ős
  • A genetikai kód fejlődése és a "kódoló koenzim fogantyú hipotézis".
